Wallace Day, Saturday 22/8/26
The weather was warm and sunny, and a decent number of people had appeared when the proceedings started at midday with a welcome and introductory remarks from Neil Lochiel. Convenor David Reid then spoke, and showed everyone present the replica Wallace Letter the Society had been given by the Scottish National Archives. Due to the nature of the replica, it cannot be displayed in full daylight, so everyone interested was invited along to Elderslie Village Hall, where a fete was being held, and the Society had been invited to the kirk hall to talk to people and display the usual array of cutlery... Gordon Aitken then sang a couple of songs about Wallace, wreaths were then laid, and the lament played by piper Alex Scullion.

Gordon then announced the annual David R. Ross Award - to an extremely surprised Michael Balahura for his invaluable contribution of his many excellent photographs of Society events, which he has been attending for many years. A naturally shy gent, more used to being behind the camera rather than in front of it, but he coped with good grace.

A few closing remarks from Neil, and all present ended the commemoration with the traditional song "Scots Wha Hae" led by Gordon Aitken. The committee chatted with the crowd for a while, then we all headed to the village hall, where we were given a place in the kirk hall where the lighting was sufficiently subdued to allow public display of the Wallace Letter replica. Three hours of a constant stream of interested people, with David, Gordon and Nick doing their best to cope with the various questions about the Society, the Letter, and of course the weaponry on display, which the kids always like to see - and play with! A successful day in all.
