MP James Kelly speaks in Rutherglen Old Parish Church
Rutherglen Old Parish Church 13th February 2016
Another great day for The Society of William Wallace as two plaques were unveiled at the Church, one inside & one outside. These were placed to mark where Sir William Wallace was betrayed by Sir John Monteith, allowing him to be captured by the English. This betrayal led to his capture on 3 August 1305 and his torture & execution in London 20 days later. The day was led by speeches from Gary, our Convenor; Hugh Miller, Session Clerk of the church; James Kelly, local MSP; and Margaret Ferrier, local MP. Entertainment was provided by Clann an Drumma, and George and Donald from Fiery Jack. The internal plaque was unveiled by James Kelly, and the external plaque by Margaret Ferrier. The event was well attended, by both members of the Society and a large number of local people keen to hear more about their heritage.
